School can create many anxieties for autistic students, due to sensory overload, social demands and academic expectations.
These anxieties can then lead to reluctance to leave the house each morning, avoidance of some classes and increased absences from school, which can then culminate in Anxiety Based School Avoidance (ABSA). This excellent resource produced by Strive NI clearly explains why ABSA occurs and how to support students.
