Today, on Autism Acceptance Day, the Centre is delighted to launch its latest Research Bulletin, which is on the topic of ‘Employment and Employment Support’.
Autistic people are significantly under-represented in the workforce, despite many having valuable skills and a motivation to work. The barriers to employment are multiple, and include communication challenges in interviews, sensory overload in the work environment and poor knowledge of autism among employers and colleagues. Changes are happening and challenges are being addressed, but organisations still need to implement significant changes in the workplace environment and processes to ensure they support potential and current employees.
This Bulletin includes an in-depth interview followed by summaries of key research papers, examining the employment issues for autistic people and how improved support can be established by employers.
