Recognising the need to go to the toilet requires an awareness of when the bladder or bowel is full.
Some autistic children and young people may not register this message from the bowel or bladder due to differences in Interoception. Increased awareness of these feelings within the body can be developed through activities which replicate the sensation of fullness or pressure. This resource gives examples of such activities. Visual supports can be used to reinforce the concepts of ‘full’ and ‘empty’, explaining that when there is a sensation of fullness, it may be time to go to the toilet.
