Many children and young people with autism are visual thinkers and therefore are best supported in learning through visual methodologies.
When teaching new skills, it is important that there is a high level of structure and visual support as this will decrease anxiety and increase wellbeing and learning. Two templates have been provided on ‘making a sandwich’ and can be printed off and used as is, or as a guide to creating one more specific to your own child, young person or student. Additionally, you can click here which will bring you to a short video providing further information on the importance of visual strategies to support independence and the attainment of life skills. With huge thanks to Alfie and his family for helping us demonstrate visual structure and support in practice.
