Some children and young people miss interoceptive signals when they are involved in another task, such as schoolwork, playing or watching TV.
Other stimuli may distract them and they aren’t aware of the internal body messages. This can mean that they do not process that they need the toilet, resulting in an accident. Checking in regularly with the child or young person can remind them to tune it to their body messages and respond accordingly.
These visual prompts can be used to remind the child or young person to focus on the sensation of needing the toilet, and think about whether or not they need to go.
