Autism and Communication.

This full-day training opportunity will use a combination of lectures and workshops to help participants understand the impact of communication differences for autistic students in mainstream educational settings. The training will focus on exploring the differences between neurotypical and autistic communication styles, offering participants a detailed insight into how autistic students interact socially and how to effectively support them in developing their communication skills.

Throughout the training, participants will learn how to assist their students in comprehending expectations in the classroom and throughout the day through the use of visual aids. 

A range of practical strategies will be explored for implementation by educators.

Key learning objectives include:

  • Exploring the communication differences experienced by autistic students.
  • Understanding the concept of monotropism and its influence on language and communication.
  • Developing an understanding of gestalt language processing.
  • Exploring a variety of supportive techniques in both receptive, understanding, and expressive communication. 

Overall, this training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support autistic students in their communication development within a mainstream educational setting.

Tracey McGovern

Tracey McGovern

Tracey McGovern is a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist at Middletown Centre for Autism. She is skilled in the delivery of early intervention programmes and has a keen interest in multi-agency working from the diagnostic process through to intervention in school and home settings. Tracey has considerable experience in training parents and health professionals in the key issues associated with autism. She has also worked widely with education professionals in multi-agency teams as an integral member of an innovative diagnostic and intervention service.
Carolyn Frazer

Carolyn Frazer

Carolyn Frazer is an Autism Trainer/Advisor in Middletown Centre for Autism, formerly employed in Ashfield Girls High School, Belfast, where she supported autistic students to access the curriculum. She qualified in Speech and Language Therapy and has a Master’s degree in Psychology. During Carolyn’s Masters studies, she undertook research on Autism and Bullying and continues to provide training sessions and support for autistic students in this area. Carolyn’s other areas of specialisms include supporting communication and anxiety for Post Primary aged students. She is an associate lecturer on the Post Graduate Certificate in Autism Studies with Stranmillis University College, Belfast.
