Autism and the Use of Visual Supports in Mainstream Education
This training programme aims to equip teachers and education professionals with knowledge and practical tools for effectively incorporating visual supports in the education of autistic students. The course will focus on understanding the unique learning styles and requirements of autistic students who are either meeting or surpassing cognitive developmental norms, and how visual strategies can be tailored to support their learning.
Participants will learn to:
- Assess and prioritise strategies for autistic students
- Emphasise the use of visual aids in teaching
- Address auditory overload and reduce reliance on verbal commands
- Select skills to be taught using visual strategies and implement them in a one-on-one setting for generalisation
- Evaluate and enhance the use of visual supports in their educational setting.
The programme will include video demonstrations, practical examples, and reading materials to demonstrate the effective use of visual strategies in teaching. It will underscore the importance of minimising verbal commands and adopting a personalised visual approach through individual assessments and skill-building exercises. Additionally, detailed guidance will be provided on integrating visual supports in teaching various areas such as social communication and life skills.
